Unchecked electrochemical corrosion can cause catastrophic structural wall thinning within only a few years of service. Cathodic Protection (CP) is the primary line of defense used globally to preserve the structural integrity of submerged and buried maritime assets.

1. The Electrochemical Principle of Cathodic Protection

Corrosion is an electrochemical oxidation reaction in which metal atoms (typically iron, Fe) lose electrons and dissolve as positive ions into the electrolyte:

<math display="block"><semantics><mrow><mi>F</mi><mi>e</mi><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><mi>F</mi><msup><mi>e</mi><mrow><mn>2</mn><mo lspace="0em" rspace="0em">+</mo></mrow></msup><mo>+</mo><mn>2</mn><msup><mi>e</mi><mo>−</mo></msup></mrow><annotation encoding="application/x-tex">Fe \\rightarrow Fe^{2+} + 2e^-</annotation></semantics></math>

Cathodic protection suppresses this degradation by supplying an external electrical current that forces the entire surface of the protected structure to act as a cathode. Because reduction reactions occur at the cathode (such as oxygen reduction), metal loss is effectively arrested while oxidation is deliberately forced onto an auxiliary anode.

2. Sacrificial Galvanic Anodes (GACP)

Galvanic Cathodic Protection relies on the natural potential difference between two dissimilar metals in the galvanic series. Metals with a significantly more electronegative open-circuit potential than steel are mounted directly to the hull or submerged structure:

Zinc and Aluminum Anodes: Widely used in open seawater due to their high electrochemical efficiency and stable current output per unit weight.

Magnesium Anodes: Typically restricted to freshwater or low-salinity estuaries due to their high driving voltage, which could otherwise cause hydrogen embrittlement or paint disbondment on steel in open marine waters.

Key Advantages: Passive operation (requires no external electric power supply), simple mechanical installation, and intrinsic reliability with zero electrical control failure risk.

Limitations: Limited driving voltage, weight penalty for large structures, and the requirement for periodic dry-dock replacement once the anode mass is depleted.

3. Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP)

For large commercial vessels, extensive dock piling, and long offshore pipelines, sacrificial anodes can become prohibitively heavy and generate excessive hydrodynamic drag. ICCP systems solve this by utilizing an external direct-current (DC) power source:

Power Units: Controlled transformer-rectifiers convert shipboard AC power into precisely regulated DC current.

Mixed Metal Oxide (MMO) or Platinized Titanium Anodes: Inert anodes that discharge current into the water without undergoing significant consumption over time.

Zinc Reference Electrodes: Continuously measure the structure-to-electrolyte potential and feed real-time signals back to an automated controller, which dynamically adjusts current output based on ship speed, water salinity, and paint condition.

Key Advantages: Extended operating life (often matching the lifetime of the vessel), automated feedback control, low hydrodynamic profile, and substantially reduced weight.

4. Design and Maintenance Standards

Cathodic protection systems are designed, audited, and maintained in compliance with international standards such as NACE SP0169, DNV-RP-B401, and ISO 15589. Regular verification of hull protection potentials (typically maintained between -800 mV and -1050 mV relative to a silver/silver chloride reference electrode) is mandatory to eliminate corrosion without inducing cathodic hydrogen blistering.

Electrochemistry, design considerations, and mitigation of seawater corrosion in port assets and vessels Metallic assets deployed in marine and offshore environments—such as ship hulls, offshore platforms, sheet piling, and subsea pipelines—are continuously exposed to an aggressively corrosive electrolyte: seawater.
